Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but you can only add a photo to a collection once. So if you drop a few photos onto a collection that already contains those photos, then the count does not update.
I also saw this with a new regular collection. Photos added with the B shortcut for the target collection. The count was wrong in various ways but always less than the contents of the collection. Today the count is empty, not even a zero. Yes, I know about resetting the preferences but it's not something I do lightly since the list of items to reconfigure is very long now. Yes, I've rebooted the mac. This may be a programming glitch.
On an Intel Mac with LrC 11.1 (because I have Publish collections) and Big Sur 11.6.4.
Also, as a reminder, you cannot add photos directly to a Collection Set.
You can only successfully add photos to a Collection, e.g. to one that's inside the Set.
Generally speaking this right pointing triangular arrow denotes a collapsed grouping, such as, the top level container of a collection set. Clicking on that arrow expands the grouping. After doing this, the triangular arrow turns to point downward and the contents of the Set are shown (indented) below.
Umm. Odd that you annotate my screenshot of Tech Nights photos and don't check your info. 1- That screenshot show the icon of a regular collection, not a collection set. 2- The right-pointing triangle would be solid (not dotted, as shown) when there are collections inside of a collection set. Since this is a regular collection and not a set, there can't be collections within it anyway.
My bad, maybe that's a matter of seeing the interface so magnified - please disregard my use of that screenshot and I apologise for any perceived criticism thereby. It was just what was at hand.
That said, for the benefit of the wider forum it remains the case that one cannot drop images onto a Collection Set, which a few other people have been tripped up by (in previous threads here) - so, IMO, is worth eliminating.
No worries. Now I see it was just a pick of the wrong screenshot to illustrate one more reason the count wouldn't go up when trying to add images. But Collection Sets don't have any counts so I doubt the OP was doing that.
No cumulative count of images shows for a Set, in the Collections panel, true - but a total count is (or should be) given at top left of the Filmstrip, for whatever you've clicked on as images source: Folder, Collection or Set.
