P: New Update Not Saving Image Rotation

I'm working on digitizing film on a copystand with the camera aimed down, so the photos tend to be rotated every which way. With the new ACR update today, it appears to be keeping my my edits but will not keep the rotation change. I've even tried rotating in Bridge but it doesn't keep the rotation once I open in ACR. Anyone else have this problem?

ACR is version 14.0.0.950

Bridge is version 11.1.1.185

Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H1

Exactly the same here, and I use this feature quite extensively.

I have not been able to reproduce this problem, but I have a few questions that might help us discover what is going wrong.

1. Have the DNG files actually been updated before you open them in Camera Raw? After performing the orientation change in Bridge, please use the File Explorer to inspect the Date Modified times of  DNG files you edited (or, in the rare case you're using sidecars for the DNGs, the Date Modified times of the sidecars).  These should actually be updated if Bridge succeedes writing the edit to the metadata.

2. Two things I observe from the screenshot (thanks for sharing it) are that the photos appear to be on a network location and many are selected in Bridge. I assume you may have rotated batches of files in Bridge. Do you still see the bug with only one or a couple of the  DNG files stored on fast local drive? Please try copying a few to your C: drive and try to reproduce the bug again.

3. When you open the photos in Camera Raw after changing the orientation in Bridge, do you see any warning dialogs? Specifically, are you shown a warning that tells you metadata write operations are still in progress?

Mainly, I'm curious if the problem has something to do with Bridge taking a long time to finish (or maybe start) updating the orientation in the DNGs. If you open a DNG in Camera Raw before Bridge is done, Camera Raw won't see the change. Working over a network is usually slower than working on a local storage device, and updating many files takes longer than updating one file. That said, we expect that Bridge should warn you about this possibility first with a dialog box before it opens Camera Raw.

Thanks,

David

I am having the same problem. I am using a PC, I have latest update, purged cache, increased cache size and everything is save to local drive. I get no warning- message. I can edit the file in camera raw but it does not save the changes at all.

All edits, or just orientation?

One thing that would help us here is for folks to document the exact steps they are taking, what they see at each step.

Thanks,
David

It looks like it is only the rotation in Camera Raw that wont save in Bridge with a Tiff file. (RAW files work fine)

If I open a file in Camera Raw from Bridge and Rotate I can see it rotate in CR. I click done and go back to Bridge. Then when I look at the file in Bridge it is not rotated. If I reopen it in CR it is not rotated. If I rotate in CR and then open in PS the rotation is applied. I can also rotate the images in Bridge however the rotation is not applied when I open it in PS.

I ahve been able to batch process rotation to tiffs before so this is a new problem. Hope this helps.

This is different than the original post, which was about DNGs. Please try different TIFF files (make a new document in Ps, save as a TIFF, etc.), and try with the TIFF files located on a different storage device. If it only happens to some TIFF files, regardless of the drive they are on, please provide a sameple of one of these TIFFs.

Thanks,

David

Hi, so my steps are as follows:

  1. convert files from memory card to hard drive using Adobe DNG Converter
  2. drag said DNGs from file manager into Photoshop which opens DNGs in Camera Raw
  3. select all, rotate, click done
  4. open dngs in any image viewer, no rotation (were rotated before in 2021)
  5. all other edits (curves, exposure, etc.) are applied

I need to rotate hundreds of DNGs like this daily for work, so hopefully this can be reverted to 2021 behaviour.

I am experiencing the exact same issue in Bridge/ACR.

All image edits (and cropping) work as usual. Image Orientation and Flip are not saved when you exit ACR.

Also, Bridge rotate (outside ACR) does not carry over to ACR.
