"Exciting day at the races". Two people sit in chairs asleep while watching the very slow results of two competing boulders at The Racetrack in Death Valley National Park. The area gets its name from the once mysterious tracks which are the result of periodic winter storms over many years that brought moisture to the playa followed by cold night time temperatures which then formed thin sheets of ice and then are pushed by high winds, nudging the boulders a little at a time and creating these remarkable tracks. Disclaimer: The playa is a senstive environment and the site of theft and vandalism. The participants in this photo were careful to make sure the ground was dry and that the chairs left no trace.
